New wands on the temporary safer cycle pathway along King Street in Hammersmith
Road transport currently accounts for 16 per cent of our carbon emissions in H&F.
That’s why we’ve made it our goal to encourage and enable all residents to make active travel, public transport and cleaner vehicle choices.
“Central to tackling climate change and promoting a healthier lifestyle is how we travel, the transport we use and the way we access goods and services”, commented Cllr Wesley Harcourt, H&F Cabinet Member for Environment, at this week’s H&F Climate Carnival webinar ‘Future of Travel’.
“We’re working hard to ensure new services are introduced safely, responsibly and cost effectively”, he added, “but a big shift is still required from us all to make walking, cycling and electric vehicles the new norm in H&F.”
We have already made great strides towards meeting our goal of net zero carbon emissions by 2030, including our zero-emission last-mile delivery and courier service Parcels Not Pollution and other policies to improve traffic congestion and air quality in H&F.
Green transport initiatives
Resident-led charge point deployment for electric vehicles (EV)
In H&F, you’re never far away from a ‘fast’ charge. With:
- 1,500 received requests
- 500 installed EV charging points
- and a provision rate of 165 chargers per square mile (and counting) (pdf 3.8MB).
H&F already has the highest density of residential charge points in London. But did you know that you can suggest additional locations for lamp column charge points? By the end of next year, EV drivers should find at least one on every single street in the borough.

Safer Cycling on the Safer Cycle Pathway

H&F is committed to becoming the country’s greenest, and with it, a more bike-friendly borough. An integral part of our 2015 Cycle Strategy are:
- safer roads
- more bike storage and
- free training opportunities for all ages.
We have set ourselves the ambitious goal of tripling the 240 currently available bike storage places across the borough (pdf 812KB) by May 2022. Our plans include a new weather-protected secure hub with a 90-bike-capacity for central Hammersmith. H&F residents may also request a bike hangar space near their home, of which there are 40 units available to date.
Step by step, or rather street by street, the highly anticipated east-west Safer Cycle Pathway is taking shape in Hammersmith.

Electric scooter trial
Five months ago, the Dott, TIER and Lime e-scooters hit the streets of H&F. Since then, our residents have taken 55,000 trips and covered more than 154,000 km.
That’s comparable to a ride on the Central line from West Ruislip to Epping and all the way back to West Ruislip again (arguably less enjoyable however). E-bikes are to be added to the rental scheme’s repertoire early next year, providing H&F with even more active travel options to enjoy (responsibly).
Background
In the lead up to the 2021 UN Climate Change Conference (COP26), H&F hosted the Climate Carnival – a week of in-person and online events and activities for residents of all ages to celebrate the fantastic efforts of our community and a great opportunity for us all to learn how to create #ClimateActionTogether.
