Climate and Ecology Strategy annual report - 2023 to 2024 - Things we use

Our progress

Repairing, reusing and sharing

We’ve refurbished 70 solar panels and donated these to reconstruction efforts in Ukraine, saving 63 tonnes of CO2e.

Our Library of Things has been a tremendous success, allowing residents to borrow rather than buy tools, equipment, and household items, reducing unnecessary purchases to save money and emissions.

We commissioned the Repair Directory to map reliable local electrical repair businesses to help residents keep their devices alive for longer.

Planet-friendly food

  • The Nourish Hub offers pay-what-you-feel community meals made from surplus and plant-based ingredients, reducing food waste
  • Our schools offer meat-free Mondays, and we’re looking at how we can reduce food waste and increase the amount of vegetable options in our council food procurement.
  • We’re rolling out food waste collection, to divert organic waste from landfills, reducing methane emissions and supporting composting initiatives.

Our community’s achievements

  • The community clothes swap at LIVAT has been a hit, encouraging residents to reuse old clothes, thereby extending their lifecycle and reducing textile waste.
  • At Old Oak Community Centre, materials ranging from nappies and kitchenware to clothing and small pieces of furniture are thoughtfully collected and rehomed, fostering a culture of reuse and resourcefulness.
  • Our monthly community electrical repair café, supported by the council, has been exceptionally popular, providing residents with valuable skills to repair small electrical items and promoting a culture of repair and reuse.
  • Organisations like Petit Miracles are helping to give furniture a second life through refurbishment.
