Starting your tenancy

Your responsibilities as a tenant and our responsibilities as your landlord.

Welcome!

We want you to be happy and settled in your new home. The following information will help you to settle into your home and to support your tenancy with the council.

We understand that renting a home can be daunting, so if you need some advice or if you have any problems, your local housing office can help.

If you are a new council tenant, you will have signed your tenancy agreement, which is a formal contract between you and the council.

The tenancy agreement explains:

  • your rights and responsibilities as a council tenant
  • how to pay your rent and other charges
  • who is responsible for repairs and maintenance
  • what could cause you to be evicted.

You can contact your housing officer if there's anything you don't understand.
