Hammersmith & Fulham's Law Enforcement Team has begun extra patrols to increase safety for women and girls.

“Women have been feeling unsafe when walking the streets for too long,” said Cllr Rebecca Harvey, H&F Cabinet Member for Social Inclusion and Community Safety. "Our LET has been a reassuring presence to many residents. But we want to do more so, we’re working with local people to take action. We also hope to launch a public consultation in the near future on the introduction of a PSPO for street sexual harassment.

"We welcome your views. Please tell us what we can do to help ensure women and girls feel safe in the borough."

Eight nights

H&F's LET patrols the borough day and night, seven days a week.

Running between 6pm to midnight, every Friday and Saturday in March, H&F’s uniformed officers will increase their patrols in high-footfall areas locally, including:

W12

  • Shepherds Bush Green
  • Shepherds Bush Market
  • Shepherds Bush town centre including Uxbridge Road, surrounding streets and tube/train stations

W6

  • Hammersmith Broadway
  • Hammersmith flyover and Eventim Apollo
  • Hammersmith town centre streets including King Street, Glenthorne Road, Angel Walk, Blacks Road, Macbeth Street and tube stations

SW6

  • Fulham Broadway
  • Fulham town centre and surrounding streets including North End Road, Lillie Road and North End Road Market.

Women’s safety

In 2022, we asked hundreds of residents and visitors, specifically women and girls, how we could make H&F a safer and more equal place for everyone who visits, lives, works or studies in the borough. Since then, the LET has continued to work closely with local businesses and residents to address the concerns raised.

Last week, H&F Leader Stephen Cowan joined a LET patrol in Brackenbury Village. He explained: “Our LET is looking out for low level anti-social behaviour all the way up to drug dealing, sexual harassment and criminality.

“If you see them, say hello. If you know something that's going on in your area, tell them about it. It will help us crackdown on crime, which is always our number one priority.”

Shepherds Bush Green

H&F officers are also continuing extra patrols in Shepherds Bush to help ensure that the Green is once again a space for everyone to enjoy.

Here to help

Last year, H&F’s Law Enforcement Team conducted a total of 85,000 patrols around the borough, 50,000 of them in H&F’s streets.

Working alongside our CCTV control room and the police, our officers can deal with street-based crime where it occurs. Every LET officer is trained in how to support women and girls who may be experiencing street harassment or violence, and can provide guidance on how to access support through the Ask for Angela scheme or how to – safely – shut down harassment on public transport.

Hammersmith-based beauty giant L’Oreal and the Suzy Lamplugh Trust have teamed up to offer FREE bystander training to H&F residents and workers. It’s just part of H&F’s large programme of events to mark Women’s History Month.
