Trial to make Wormholt safer and quieter

Residents have asked H&F to help reduce noise, congestion and pollution problems in the area’s residential streets

The trial will make Wormholt safer and quieter

Hammersmith & Fulham Council has been working closely with the residents of Wormholt to make the area safer and quieter.

A neighbourhood improvement trial to improve the quality of life for families across Wormholt will begin in November.

More than 80% of vehicles using Wormholt's residential roads are just commuters cutting through between the A40 and Uxbridge Road.

The trial aims to deter these drivers while allowing Hammersmith & Fulham residents to continue to use the streets of Wormholt freely.

You asked, we’re delivering

The decision to go ahead with the trial – which will last for up to 18 months – follows an extensive consultation with local residents and businesses. The trial tackles long-standing complaints about noise, congestion and pollution.

Hundreds of people took part and gave their support to the use of the latest camera technology to discourage non-resident traffic.

The aim is to significantly reduce traffic in Wormholt while increasing safety for pedestrians, cyclists and other road users. Vehicle access will be maintained for residents, their visitors and businesses.

How the trial will work

All H&F residents can still drive freely everywhere. If you've got an H&F parking permit, your vehicle is registered with us and can automatically pass through the cameras without any fines. If you've got off-street parking but no permit, you can apply for a FREE Borough Access Permit on our website.

Three trial cameras will restrict out-of-borough motorists using Steventon Road, Bryony Road and Sawley Road to cut through between the A40 and Uxbridge Road, and vice versa.

The trial will be enforced by three automatic number plate recognition cameras:

  1. On Steventon Road near the junction with Old Oak Road
  2. On Bryony Road near the junction with Bloemfontein Road
  3. On Sawley Road near the junction with Bloemfontein Road

Three cameras will discourage out-of-borough motorists using our streets as cut-throughs.

Cameras are located at the eastern end of Bryony Road, the western end of Steventon Road and the eastern end of Sawley Road.

All drivers can enter or leave the area via Uxbridge Road without going through cameras.

Every road in the area is still accessible without going through a camera. Drivers can enter and exit via Uxbridge Road.

Extensive signage will be put up to help guide motorists. Warning letters during the opening weeks will explain the trial in full to help motorists come to terms with the changes.

Supporting local residents and businesses

We are committed to working with local residents and businesses to ensure the trial works for them. Businesses can book their staff, shoppers and deliveries through using a Business Access Permit on RingGo.

Business permit holders, the emergency services, buses and coaches, black cabs, the Royal Mail, and council services and contractors can go through the cameras without penalty.

Carers, healthcare workers and specialist services supporting Wormholt residents can also register for automatic free access.

Uber, Bolt, Addison Lee and Wheely will be given full access through the cameras to drop-off and pick-up passengers in Wormholt.

Residents living in the area can grant access for their visitors through the cameras. We will continue to fully consult Wormholt residents and businesses during the trial period.

Monitoring the traffic

We will be installing monitoring-only cameras on Old Oak Road, Bloemfontein Road and Ellerslie Road.

This will allow us to monitor any changes in traffic volumes and driver behaviour. These cameras will not issue fines. They'll collect data to help us understand traffic patterns during the trial.

We are doing this because there may be some temporary displacement of traffic while the trial beds in. If this becomes a longer-term issue, we will consult residents before deciding whether to activate additional enforcement in a wider area.
