This comedic yet emotional new play is a worthy final curtain call for director Lynette Linton after her six year stint as Artistic Director at the Bush Theatre.
The world premiere production from writer, Emma Dennis-Edwards, Not Your Superwoman explores the complex relationship between a mother daughter duo as they embark on a trip to Guyana in the wake of a family loss.
Golda Rosheuvel and Letitia Wright's performances are by far the highlight of the show. Wright is particularly captivating as Gen Z daughter, Erica, who is in touch with her emotions thanks to therapy. Rosheuvel plays witty and emotionally withdrawn mother, Joyce, who equally draws the audience in.
We're introduced to the pair as they embark on a long flight to the Caribbean island to spread the ashes of Erica's grandmother, Elaine, whom both actors alternate adopting the role of in flashbacks throughout. What ensues is a lot of energy, emotion and joy.
The show is at its best in the comedic early scenes, when they'll have you laughing out loud at every other line. You know the flight's going to be tense when Joyce bemoans that it's not a surprise Erica is running late, as "she was two weeks and one day late for her own birth."
Laughs spread through the audience while the pair bond over their mutual love of Michael B. Jordan "times two" in Sinners. And the laughter only intensifies while Joyce accidentally plays a Central Cee song out her phone, who happens to also be on the flight.
The simple set makes great use of lighting, music and sound to create an impactful atmosphere despite the stripped backed staging.
