A new Aldi store has opened its doors in Fulham Broadway shopping centre in Fulham Road.

Located in the former ground-floor Wilko shop, the new store is open 8am to 10pm on Monday to Saturday, and 11am to 5pm on Sunday.

It's another important boost to our high streets as we work to make Hammersmith& Fulham the best place to live, work and socialise.

H&F Mayor Cllr Sharon Holder joined Team GB gold medallist Rory Gibbs at its recent opening day. She said:

It's wonderful to welcome Aldi to Fulham. Along with our iconic North End Road market just up the road, residents now have fantastic affordable shopping options right on their doorstep. This is all the more important as residents are feeling the cost-of-living crunch."

Team GB Olympic gold medallist Rory Gibbs dished out free bags of fresh fruit and veg to the first 30 customers before helping H&F Mayor Cllr Sharon Holder cut the ribbon.

Olympic visit

To mark the fact that Fulham now has a branch of the German discount supermarket, the two-time world rowing champion will talk to pupils at Holy Cross primary school in Basuto Road about his experience of competing as an Olympian as well as the store's campaign to encourage cooking with fresh food, 'Get Set To Eat Fresh'.

Rory said: "I am looking forward to speaking with the children at Holy Cross Catholic Primary School about the importance of eating healthily and how it can be fun to plan and prepare meals as a family. Hopefully I will inspire the pupils to keep active and try different sports."

Children from the school were also given the chance to create a poster about healthy eating for a chance to win a £20 voucher.

Rory will announce the winner and present him with their prize during the upcoming assembly.

Meanwhile, H&F charities can register with the new store, allowing them to collect surplus food and perishables including fruit, vegetables and bread, seven days a week. Charities should email aldi@neighbourly.com.

Community support

Store manager David Murray called it "a wonderful morning" and said it was lovely to welcome new customers after a construction project which has lasted six months.

He added: "I'm thrilled that we've been able to support Holy Cross Catholic Primary School through our partnership with Team GB. I look forward to meeting more of the community in the coming weeks."

There are 25 staff at the new 650sqm Aldi, which features chillers and freezers of British meat, a food-to-go section and a range of health and beauty products.

'Which?' magazine has declared Aldi the UK's cheapest supermarket for the last four years on the trot.

Football match days

To protect neighbours from antisocial behaviour, Aldi's drinks licence means it cannot sell alcohol in the three hours before kick-off when Chelsea are playing at home.
