A West Kensington street has been revitalised, offering 72 new and improved homes for borough residents – all at an affordable rent.
Lisgar Terrace features 10 five-storey brick blocks, built in the 1920s as affordable housing for the people of H&F. Following a major make-over by Southern Housing Group, H&F Council has been able to move residents into the homes – which range from one-bedroom, to three-bedroom flats.
“As well as building the largest number of genuinely affordable homes in a decade, we're working with partners to maximise the supply of high-quality homes, genuinely affordable homes for local people,” said Cllr Lisa Homan, H&F Cabinet Member for Housing.
“Schemes like this help families and individuals who are struggling to afford to remain in the borough, and takes them out of expensive temporay accomodation.”
The project includes a comprehensive regeneration of existing homes, as well as providing new and extended homes, new soft and hard landscaping throughout the estate, and the refurbishment of communal facilities. The results bring residents’ homes up to a modern standard, significantly improve the quality of their accommodation and ensure the estate's continuing viability into the future.
Magda Ryan is one new resident who was really pleased with the positive change she encountered at Lisgar Terrace.
“The flats are beautiful,” said Magda, who lives in a flat with her young daughter. “This new apartment is a real improvement on where I was living before. When I saw the new place I actually cried, I was so happy. The rent is affordable with my job, and this is a great place for my daughter and I to live.”
More affordable homes coming
H&F Council has recently secured more than 1,600 genuinely affordable homes in the borough at zero cost to taxpayers after negotiating a series of deals with developers.
St James, part of the Berkeley Group has begun to build 427 new genuinely affordable homes at White City Living on the former Marks & Spencer’s warehouse site near Westfield.
It follows on from another 89 new genuinely affordable homes which H&F Council secured for residents in White City as part of the negotiations around the planning approval for the £600 million Westfield extension works by Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield.
Over in Australia Road, 71 genuinely affordable homes for local people will be delivered on the new Ed City development, with 38 flats for key workers and 33 flats for social rent.
The council has also begun to redevelop a former hostel it owns in Lavender Court with 45 new, genuinely affordable homes for residents.
Down in Fulham, work is underway to build 133 genuinely affordable homes at Edith Summerskill House on the Clem Attlee Estate. Plus an additional 30 new, genuinely affordable homes are being built at the council-owned Fulham North Housing Office and adjacent car park on the estate.
Meanwhile in south Fulham, 36 genuinely affordable homes are planned at Watermeadow Court in Townmead Road.
