Every October we celebrate Black History Month.
Hammersmith & Fulham is a borough packed full of different cultures, heritage, traditions and stories. Every year, our many venues and community groups mark Black History Month.
Our microgrant programme is designed to get even more residents involved. It supports local work that recognises and honours the achievements, contributions, and histories of people of African and Caribbean heritage in H&F, including intersectional identities.
Who can apply?
To help celebrate and support residents of African and Caribbean heritage, we are inviting funding applications from organisations to host events throughout the entire month of October who are trying to:
- Celebrate the lives, culture and achievements of people of African and Caribbean heritage in H&F.
- Reclaim and amplify the historical presence and contributions of African and Caribbean communities in the borough.
- Showcase the creative and artistic talents of individuals from African and Caribbean backgrounds.
- Elevate the voices and achievements of young people of African and Caribbean heritage in sports, arts, education, and STEM.
- Foster intergenerational dialogue to preserve and share cultural knowledge and lived experiences.
- Explore the intersectionality of Black identity with gender, disability, LGBTQ+ identities, and other protected characteristics.
- Support mental health and wellbeing through culturally sensitive workshops or discussions.
- Highlight Black British history in education, including local stories and contributions to H&F's development.
- Encourage entrepreneurship and economic empowerment through business showcases or skills workshops.
- Promote allyship and anti-racism education to build understanding and solidarity.
- Celebrate Black joy and resilience through music, dance, food, and storytelling.
- Create safe spaces for youth expression, such as spoken word nights, art exhibitions, or digital storytelling projects.
- Address broader themes that support the advancement and empowerment of African and Caribbean heritage communities.
