Food Hygiene Rating Scheme

Guidance about food hygiene ratings in Hammersmith & Fulham

What is the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme?

The scheme provides information about hygiene standards for food businesses. We run the scheme in partnership with the Food Standards Agency (FSA). This is the central government department with responsibility for food safety.

Why is the scheme important?

It helps consumers decide where to eat and buy their food. It also recognises those businesses with the highest standards and encourages others to improve. The overall aim is to reduce the number of cases of food poisoning which currently affects about one million people in the UK every year.

Where can I get further information?

To find the latest information on the scheme please visit the FSA website.

How can a business get a better rating?

Request a re-visit

If the business has made improvements to the matters identified during the inspection they can request a re-visit.

The cost of a re-visit is £341.90. Payment to be made by card as part of the online application process.

Appeal

Firstly, the business should contact us to discuss the inspection and find out why the rating was given. If the business still thinks the rating is wrong or unfair they can make an appeal.

Right to reply

This allows the business to say how the business has improved hygiene, or to say if there were unusual circumstances at the time of the inspection. A business’s right to reply will be published online with its hygiene rating.

Download and fill in the right to reply form, available as a Word doc or PDF.

Where will the food hygiene rating be displayed?

You can look up food hygiene ratings on the food hygiene rating page on the FSA website.

Businesses are given a window sticker showing their rating and are encouraged to display this at their premises in a place where you can easily see it when you visit. Display is currently voluntary in England.
