Deaf educator and British Sign Language (BSL) advocate Alexia Lumley is one of the top tutors at Hammersmith & Fulham's Macbeth Centre.

With a lifelong connection to BSL and years of teaching experience, Alexia is passionate about helping her students gain new skills and understand the importance of inclusivity.

Cllr Alex Sanderson, Deputy Leader of H&F, said:

What Alexia brings to the Macbeth Centre is exactly what makes it so special – brilliant teaching, a love of community, and a real commitment to inclusion. We're so proud to have tutors like her. Learning here isn't just about gaining a qualification – it's about making H&F a stronger, kinder place to live for everyone."

You can find the complete range of more than 450 courses, all taught by top-class tutors, on our website.

Decades of experience

"I grew up learning BSL and Sign Supported English through my Deaf school," explained Alexia, who is Deaf. "My teaching journey began when I set up a BSL club at a mainstream primary school to teach students basic signs. I quickly realised how much I loved teaching – and that it was my true calling."

This passion led her to complete Sign Language Teacher Training, and since then she's taught everywhere from schools and hospitals to refugee centres, mental health services and even worked with VoluntEars – an organisation that supports Deaf people through overseas volunteering.

Alexia's classes are interactive, visual and welcoming for all levels. This year, she's teaching Introduction to BSL and BSL Level 1 courses – find her classes here.

"I love seeing my students go from having no signing experience to confidently communicating by the end of the course," she added.

Alexia also features in a powerful documentary which highlights the Deaf experience in Britain. Produced by her sister, Saskia Lumley, you can watch it on the Sky News Youtube channel:
