INTERVIEW: Meet local DJ and referee supporting older residents in H&F homes

Meet West Kensington resident Marilyn Mackie, who is Chair of our resident-led Sheltered Housing Group

Marilyn Mackie, Chair of Sheltered Housing Group

Marilyn has lived and worked in H&F most of her life. She moved into sheltered housing in 2010 and has been dedicated to supporting older residents and working with the council to improve sheltered housing ever since.

Why did you join the Sheltered Housing Group?

I've been involved for over 15 years. I became a tenant representative not long after moving in and became Chair two years later. I want to help make H&F the best place to live.

I also sit on the Housing Representatives Forum, Housing Estate Services and Investment group.

Tell us an interesting fact about your place

The sheltered housing scheme I live in, St Andrews Court, is one of the smallest in H&F with just 26 residents.

What's your biggest achievements in the group?

We helped improve repairs with the council's in-house repairs team now doing all sheltered housing repairs.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself

I was one of England's first female referees, earning my badges in 1977 and taking charge of matches in the Surrey County league.

Great answer! Have you got another fun fact?

I'm also a DJ! The best venue I've played in H&F is the Hurlingham Club. My favourite tunes are rock and roll of the 60s and medleys.

Where do you like to shop?

I love shopping locally in the North End Road. I get fresh vegetables from the market and meat from my local butchers, Dickenson's. Also, Waitrose who kindly donated food to the tenants' party last Christmas when we had our pantomime show.

And your favourite sports team?

I'm a season ticket holder at Craven Cottage. I'm hoping Fulham win some silverware next season and stay up again in the Premier League.
