From installing 6,000 free new fire doors at no charge to tenants and leaseholders, to the free replacement of white goods appliances, H&F Council is working hard to keep residents safe in their homes.
It all forms part of the council's Fire Safety Plus programme which goes above and beyond UK safety laws.
The free home visits offered to residents in council homes include free smoke detectors and testing, new fire doors and the free testing and replacement of home appliances that fail electrical safety checks.
The safety programme is part of the council's more than £1m a week investment into its homes to make H&F the best place to live in the country.
Cabinet Member for Housing and Homelessness, Cllr Frances Umeh, said:
We're working hard with London Fire Brigade to keep residents safe in our homes. Our Fire Safety Plus home visits and evacuation alert systems go above and beyond UK safety laws as we do all we can to put residents' safety first. This is all part of the work we're doing to make H&F a stronger, safer and kinder place."
London Fire Brigade Hammersmith Station Commander, James Berry said: "It's encouraging to see Hammersmith & Fulham Council taking proactive measures to prioritise fire safety. We will continue working together to help keep residents and communities safe."
Safety first
Fire safety improvements made by the council to its homes include:
- nine new evacuation alert systems to protect more than 1,000 homes in its high-rise buildings
- 6,000 free new fire doors
- 17,000 fire doors inspected every year
- sprinklers in 600 homes
- free safety checks to appliances and free replacements for faulty goods
- 380 free personal emergency evacuation plans (PEEPs) for residents who would need assistance to evacuate from their homes in the event of a fire.
Local resident Annetta Kelly of Bush Court in Shepherds Bush who recently had a Fire Safety Plus home visit said: "After my tumble dryer failed its electrical safety test, the team quickly and efficiently organised a replacement. The service was brilliant. They kept me informed throughout and I really appreciate their commitment to electrical safety."
