The King and Queen hosted a garden party at Buckingham Palace this week – and one White City school was cordially invited to join the royal celebration.
Dressed in her summer finery, Francesca Smith, head of Jack Tizard Special School in White City, represented Hammersmith & Fulham's education excellence at the prestigious gathering on Wednesday (14 May).
"The day was beautiful; we saw the King and Queen, we had cucumber sandwiches, cake… then ice cream on the lawn," said Francesca, who has led the school for over 20 years.
The special event brought together outstanding contributors from across the education sector, with Jack Tizard being the only H&F school to receive the royal invitation.
A school to celebrate
The invitation recognised the exceptional work Jack Tizard does for students aged 2 to 19 with severe learning difficulties.
"We felt very privileged; we're incredibly proud of the work our school does," said Francesca. "The band was playing show tunes, and the Queen looked absolutely lovely in her white hat."
At her side throughout the day was Jo Grenfell, the Jack Tizard business manager for 15 years, as they networked with professionals from different educational fields.
"It's a great place to work and study, and our pupils are an absolute joy to work with," said Francesca. "No two days are ever the same."
The palace garden – which itself is Grade II* listed – has hosted royal gatherings for 150 years, with the most lavish celebrations marking Queen Victoria's golden and diamond jubilees.
The royal recognition continues locally, as Jack Tizard staff have also been invited to a special summer party at Fulham Palace next month.
