Creative flair will combine with garden inspiration for a harvest-themed art exhibition to launch in White City this autumn.
Colourful mosaics, dreamy watercolour paintings and handcrafted knits are just some of the artworks set to be displayed at the Harvest Time garden art exhibition at White City Community Centre on Friday 11 and Saturday 12 October.
Influenced by the fruit, vegetables and flowers grown at the White City Meanwhile Garden, the exhibition will share the creative results of a weekly art workshop held at the green nook in India Way.
The garden and art projects are a “great, collaborative community effort”, explains Anne Macalpine, who led on bringing the derelict green space into local use in 2021.
Each week, volunteers aged 18 to 90 take part in activities at the White City Meanwhile Garden, including maintenance, growing and art projects.
The garden also hosts the social enterprise Soup4Lunch, using produce grown on the plot to cook tasty and nutritious food for volunteers and the community.
The Harvest Time exhibition will showcase original works created by some of the volunteers during sessions hosted by artist Emily Fuller.
Emily – who created the Grenfell Tower Memorial Mosaic – guides volunteers during the weekly Wednesday ‘art in the garden’ workshops, while sessions on a Thursday include caring for the green space, which is tucked behind the White City Community Centre.
“The garden is a real haven for wildlife, as well as providing a social space for people from the local area,” adds Anne Macalpine, who is part of H&F’s Older People’s Commission.
“There is a mini pond for water beasts, and we include plenty of flowering plants which help attract a diverse variety of insects, bees and songbirds to the garden.”
