Work on your independent travel skills

You'll need to get to the workplace independently so travel training is important.

This means you will need to get around and travel to work on your own without needing someone else to take you.

Who can support you to travel on your own?

Some families arrange shared travel schemes with their network of family and friends. You can also speak to your job coach, school, college, or training provider about travel training opportunities.

Transport for London (TfL)

TfL offers a free travel mentoring service for people 16 years old and over with SEND. This includes one to one mentoring covering all TfL modes: Tube, overground, buses, Elizabeth Line, walking routes (where relevant) and more.

Depending on your circumstances they may provide a mentor to accompany you on your first few practice journeys to help you feel confident travelling the network independently.

Email travelmentor@tfl.gov.uk or call 020 3054 4361 09:00-16:00, Monday to Friday to find out more or book an appointment.

The TfL mentoring team also attends SEN schools to carry out independent travel workshops starting from year 6. They also deliver group sessions/talks around building confidence to obtain independent travel to all disability and senior age groups.
