London Permit Scheme

The London Permit Scheme is a coordinated system that regulates street works and roadworks across London.

We have run the London Permit Scheme in Hammersmith & Fulham since January 2010. This has been in collaboration with Transport for London (TfL) and other participating London boroughs to manage disruption from roadworks.

What it does

Anyone who wants to dig up roads has to apply for a permit before they can begin. This allows us to plan and coordinate the timing of works, reducing the disruption to road users.

The scheme makes sure that different roadworks don't all happen at the same time in the same area, which would cause major traffic problems.

Benefits

The scheme helps to:

  • minimise traffic disruption and congestion
  • better coordinate multiple works happening simultaneously
  • reduce the overall number of separate roadworks
  • improve planning and scheduling of essential street works
  • ensure proper management and oversight of roadworks.

Who needs a permit

Any organisation planning to carry out street works or roadworks in Hammersmith & Fulham must obtain a permit before beginning work.

This includes:

  • utility companies (gas, water, electricity, telecommunications)
  • contractors working on behalf of utilities
  • other organisations needing to excavate or work on the borough's streets.
