Fulham Camerata to perform powerful Bach concert on 17 March

The concert on Sunday 17 March will see the 35-strong group of singers perform from 6.30pm at Holy Cross Church, in Ashington Road, Fulham.

Local choral group Fulham Camerata will be joined by an array of soloists and an orchestra to perform Bach’s monumental St John Passion in Parsons Green.

The concert on Sunday 17 March will see the 35-strong group of singers perform from 6.30pm at Holy Cross Church, in Ashington Road, Fulham.

Sung in German for the concert, the St John Passion will feature seven solo performances ranging from soprano and alto to tenor and bass parts. The singers will be joined by a chamber orchestra featuring musicians including flute, oboes, violins, viola and a cello to bring the musical piece to life.

The concert has required ‘intense’ practice sessions over the past almost three months, explains Fulham Camerata’s Geraldine Cooper, to perfect the tricky score in its original German language.

First performed in the German city of Leipzig on 7 April 1724 as a Good Friday offering of the Passion story as related in St John’s Gospel, Fulham Camerata will bring its own talent to the piece for 2024.

As the final performance under current musical director Harry Castle, after six years of him leading the chamber choir, the concert is set to be a memorable event.

“It has been a wonderful six years leading Fulham Camerata, packed with so many happy memories of bringing joy to audiences across Fulham and beyond,” explained Harry.

“I know the group will continue to bring pleasure to so many other current and new music fans as they continue to share their talent through performing an array of different music.”
