A trader in H&F’s historic North End Road Market gave out the one millionth voucher this week for fresh fruit and veg to a Hammersmith family in need.

Funded by Hammersmith & Fulham Council, the Rose Vouchers Project helps residents in need with children under the age of five get fresh fruit and vegetables.

The Alexandra Rose Charity was set up by Queen Alexandra in 1912 to fund health care for Londoners living in poverty. Today its focus is on diet-related ill health and food poverty. Their Rose Vouchers can be redeemed at North End Road Market and Shepherds Bush Market.

Each Rose Voucher is worth £1, meaning an incredible £1,000,000 has been spent across the UK, on fresh fruit and vegetables sold at local markets and by independent retailers. The one millionth Rose Voucher, spent in H&F, was honoured by H&F Mayor, Cllr PJ Murphy, at North End Road Market on Wednesday (13 October).

He presented local family Iva Andreeva and her son Alexander, 4, with a ‘golden’ Rose Voucher at the Bailey’s Stall, saying:

“We want every family in H&F to have access to local fresh fruit and veg. It’s been fantastic handing out the one millionth Rose Voucher at North End Road, and I invite all families who need an extra bit of help to sign up to the scheme at their closest children’s centre.”

Since 2017, more than 750 H&F families have received Rose Vouchers from one of six local children's centres – totalling more than £124,000. Each family receives £3 worth of vouchers for each child, every week. If a child is under the age of one, they received £6 worth.

How to get Rose Vouchers

Rose Vouchers are for families with young children (under 5), and pregnant women, and are given out by local children’s centres, family centres and some community organisations.

Please visit or call your nearest children’s centre, to find out more information about eligibility and how to register for the vouchers.

North End Road improvements underway

We’ve restarted improvements works to make North End Road an even better place to shop, eat in and visit. We’ll be making the road safer by bringing market bays up to pavement level.

We’ll also be:

  • repaving the footways
  • planting new trees
  • renewing street lighting
  • adding water and electricity for market traders
  • installing new seating areas.

North End Road Market, shops, cafés, restaurants and other businesses will remain open as usual throughout the work.
