On Saturday 4 September from 10am to 4pm, check out the newly completed Sands End Arts and Community Centre by South Park, Fulham, and meet the architects and engineers behind this award-winning building.

Designed by Mae Architects to have a low environmental impact, the new centre is a light, airy and welcoming multi-purpose space for community activities and events.

It was built by Hammersmith & Fulham Council, at no cost to residents, with funding negotiated from developers (£2m from Tideway as part of its community investment as it builds the super sewer and £1.6m from Chelsea FC via its community contribution for its proposed Stamford Bridge stadium).

The centre is being managed by a trust comprising local people, with the aim of enhancing the wellbeing of residents from all backgrounds and of all ages.

Its design was inspired by the 19th century glasshouses which occupied the site until the 1980s.

Before it was even built, the centre notably won a prestigious New London Architecture Award for its future contribution to the social and economic wellbeing of Fulham.
