DanceWest's Bolder Not Older dance classes for older residents

Get your groove on this summer with a fun free series of outdoor dance and movement sessions being held in green spaces in H&F.

Residents of all ages – from the tiniest tots to older folks – can take part in the 72 live outdoor dance and wellbeing classes for free this August.

Try out salsa, Bollywood, hip-hop and jazz dance moves as part of the Dance in the Park festival in Ravenscourt Park in Hammersmith and South Park in Fulham next month.

Zumba, yoga and dance cardio are also on the programme to give locals chance to brush off the cobwebs and enjoy the great outdoors.

An award-winning team of teachers from charity DanceWest are set to lead the sessions from 5 to 22 August, with the classes running from 10am to 3.30pm each Thursday to Sunday.

Supported by Hammersmith & Fulham sports development team the programme includes intergenerational dance classes as well as sessions for families, children and adults 55+.

Kicking off the first day is a series of sessions dedicated to older residents, with DanceWest sharing its Bolder Not Older dance class in the morning, before moving onto Zumba and disco moves for the over 55s.

Families with young children can sign up for special sessions throughout Dance in the Park covering pop dance, musical theatre and even classes dedicated to Disney’s Frozen, The Lion King and classic tale the Very Hungry Caterpillar.

And with Latin dance, flamenco, jive and contemporary dance also on the programme for residents of all ages, there’s a pop-up taster for everyone.

Rosie Whitney-Fish, chief executive and founder of DanceWest, said: “The pandemic has made many people revaluate at their health and wellbeing and dance is the perfect way to get active.

“The programme is accessible, allowing people to dance outdoors in a socially-distanced way with their families, their neighbours and new people they haven’t met before.

“It is about providing people with the opportunity to get active outside and connect with their community in a fun way.

“Dance is a great way to support the body and mind – and if nothing else, provides a handy escape.”
