A Fulham estate has had a green makeover thanks to help from residents and volunteers.
Tired old hedges have been removed from the front of the Clem Attlee estate in central Fulham. They’ve been replaced with bulbs and wild meadow grasses as part of a project to improve the look of the estate and boost biodiversity.
Thanks to teamwork between estate volunteers and Hammersmith & Fulham Council’s grounds maintenance team, residents are now enjoying drifts of colour as crocuses give way to daffodils and then alliums, to provide nectar sources for butterflies and bees.
“The hedges were blocking the view of the common spaces, making the area feel less safe,” said Cllr Sharon Holder, H&F Cabinet Member for Strategy.
“Now, bulbs are pushing up in the new grassed areas. It looks fantastic and I thank all the residents and volunteers involved who have helped us towards the goal to make H&F the greenest borough in the country.”
Water conservation
It’s all down to the hard work of the estate’s block champions – the enthusiastic residents who have joined the Clem Attlee Involvement Team to make the estate brighter and better.
Estate resident Glen explained: “We just want to make a difference. It’s great seeing things getting done on the estate.”
The team has also done some prairie-style planting, with water conservation in mind, at the back of the Jim Griffiths block.
The Clem Attlee Board was set up in September last year as a link between housing providers and residents. It meets six times a year and is chaired by Cllr Holder.
The board is getting to grips with planting, parking and new housing, as well as working to bring together the estate’s diverse community.
And work has only just started. Next up, environmental improvements will be made to the bulky waste enclosure, including the installation of a green roof. By working with grounds maintenance contractor idverde, the project is powering ahead.
Andrew Kauffman, who works for idverde, said: “I was out watering the estate this morning and it was great that residents were coming down and telling us it’s a breath of fresh air! It’s great to be involved.”
New residents are always welcome to represent their block on the Clem Attlee Board.
