Homeless people and those with mental health issues are getting traditional Christmas dinners as part of the latest round of donations channelled to local frontline groups.
Nearly £19,000 has now been awarded to voluntary organisations making a difference in the lead-up to the festive break via fresh grants from UNITED in Hammersmith & Fulham (now https://hfgiving.org.uk/) and Hammersmith & Fulham Council.
The money has been donated by firms in the borough, and by warm-hearted individuals.
The latest £4,891 grant award includes money to the Barons Court Project, the only day centre in the borough supporting people on low income, the homeless and those with mental health issues.
The project has been cooking traditional dinners as part of its drop-in service, while ensuring that the latest government guidelines were met.
“I didn't think I'd get a Christmas dinner this year, but the turkey dinner and mince pies were delicious,” said one rough sleeper. “It made it feel like Christmas.”
The latest grants made by UNITED this week are:
Barons Court Project – £891
Funding a Christmas dinner meal programme for rough sleepers.
Carers Network – £1,000
Offering an online and telephone service, and befriending unpaid carers to reduce isolation.
Hestia Housing and Support – £1,000
Providing four laptops for the charity’s work.
Kulan Foundation – £1,000
Paying for a 10-week maths programme for Year 11 pupils from ethnic minorities to reduce the education gap.
Solidarity Sports – £1,000
Funding an after-school club for vulnerable children at risk of neglect and abuse.
