London’s hottest new entertainment venue in White City has been awarded a blue plaque.
Exhibition London at Westfield London, just off Wood Lane, is situated in the Grade II listed Dimco East building.
The new music and events space from Westfield London and Broadwick Venues, has breathed new life back into the historic building, which was used as the set for the ACME factory in the film ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit’ starring Bob Hoskins.
It will host its first live gig this weekend (Saturday 8 February) as British indie-pop band Catfish and the Bottlemen, perform as part of the BRITs Week for War Child 2020.
But the new venue will not just bring live music shows from some of the biggest names in the music industry to the borough. Exhibition London will also create new jobs for local residents and give local young people more opportunities in the arts.
“This beautiful Victorian building has been brought up-to-date and transformed into a new 21st century entertainment hub which has few venues to rival it in London,” said Cllr Stephen Cowan, Leader of the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham, who attended the blue plaque unveiling ceremony.
“It’s great to see this level of investment in H&F which all residents can benefit from and enjoy.”
Exhibition London is a result of the council’s Industrial Strategy (pdf 2.6MB) which aims to make H&F a place where new developments and investment offer real benefits for local residents.
The council is working hard to support the night time economy in town centres in a way that is sensitive to local residents, but enhances the borough as a destination.
Historic home
The Dimco East building was originally built in 1899 as an electricity generating station for the London Underground, before being used as a bus depot.
The council worked with Westfield and Broadwick Venues to restore the listed building.
Spanning two floors, the 34,000 sq ft events and hospitality space now has a total standing capacity of 3,000 people.
Keith Whitmore, Head of Design & Construction UK/Italy and Co-Director of Construction Management Europe, Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield, said: “Our Design & Construction team have worked closely with Hammersmith & Fulham Council, our partner Broadwick Venues, and the architectural team, to transform this building while protecting its fabric and heritage, and bringing it into public use for the first time ever as a major new venue and events space for the borough.”
