Vibrant examples of 20th century posters and prints will help Greenside Primary School host its third art fair in support of its iconic mural.
The Bouncing Off The Wall 2016 graphic arts fair will take place on Sunday 18 September from noon to 5pm at the primary school, in Westville Road, Shepherds Bush.
The fair is organised each year by the Friends of Greenside Mural charity, with proceeds going towards the upkeep of the historic Gordon Cullen artwork in the school’s foyer.
Guided tours of the school will also be offered during the art fair as part of the Open House London weekend.
The free tours will explore some of the architectural features created in the school by its designer, Erno Goldfinger, and will conclude at the Gordon Cullen mural.
Restoration
In 2014, the charity funded a major restoration of the mural, which had previously been curtained off and kept out of view. And charity founder and parent governor Kate Fishenden said the maintenance of the artwork was now an ongoing priority to preserve it for new generations of Greenside pupils.
“This artwork is almost a living wall,” she said. “It’s in a school full of small children which means it will gradually get chipped and damaged. So we really need this fund to ensure we can maintain it, rather than it being seen as a precious thing that no one is allowed to touch.”
This year’s arts fair will feature a wide range of creations from exhibitors including Jennings Fine Art, independent publisher the Mainstone Press, author and illustrator Ian Beck, art expert Alan Powers, illustrator and printmaker Jonny Hannah, Collinge & Clark Rare Books, Jane Sedgwick Wooden Jewellery, freshly pressed linocuts from the Print Wagon and prints and patterns from Starch Green.
The afternoon will include the launch of a new book on modernist architecture, ‘3 Storeys’ by illustrator Esther Cox, and a talk and display by Jane Audas on ‘modern toys for modern children’.
Visitors can enjoy a range of refreshments during the event at a vintage tearoom being run by the school’s Parent Staff Association, as well as a coffee van and stalls selling gourmet crepes and cocktails.
Entry is free, with donations welcomed towards the school’s mural fund.
