An urban farm that trains unemployed young people in horticulture is offering a taster session of their 2015 training programme.
Social enterprise scheme Cultivate London is offering volunteer traineeships and apprenticeships for 16-24-year-olds across its three sites in west London.
As part of its recruitment drive for its 2015 training programme, which runs from March 2-8, award-winning Cultivate London is offering the taster sessions from Tuesday, February 24, until Thursday, February 26. No horticulture experience is necessary and no commitment to the programme is required.
H&F Council's Cabinet Member for Social Inclusion, Cllr Sue Fennimore, said: "This is a fantastic chance for young people in Hammersmith & Fulham to get valuable training and take a big step towards finding a job. Cultivate London's training programmes will equip them with the vital skills and qualifications that will make them attractive to future employers, so these taster sessions are a real opportunity."
The taster sessions allow young people the chance to come and spend an afternoon working with the team, to see if the programme appeals.
The training programme itself has a two-and-a-half month placement with Cultivate London, as well as a two-week work placement at another business; previous partners have included Chiswick House or Ealing Council.
Trainees will learn a range of basic horticulture skills, as well as having the chance to gain a level one qualification in practical horticulture, maths and literacy. Trainees will also be involved in seed-sowing, harvest and sales.
Training takes place across three sites, in South Acton, Isleworth and Brentford. All expenses are covered, including lunch, travel and equipment costs.
Also being offered for the first time, is a three-month paid internship programme, on completion of the volunteer programme, which will be available to two of the graduate trainees.
Cultivate London was started in 2010 by Charity Housing Pathways Trust which still supports the enterprise. As well as youth programmes, Cultivate London offers an adult and corporate volunteers scheme.
