Petition for a mayoral referendum

Residents have the right to petition for a directly elected mayor in Hammersmith & Fulham.

We must hold a referendum for a directly elected mayor, if we receive a valid petition signed by at least 5% of people who are registered to vote at local government elections in Hammersmith & Fulham.

Requirements for any petition for a referendum for a change of governance

The Local Authorities (Referendums) (Petitions) (England) Regulations 2011

Under the above regulations, local authorities are obliged to publish a “verification number” which equates to the minimum number of signatures required on petitions requesting a referendum on the question of whether the council should change to a different form of governance.

For the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham the minimum number of signatures is 6,356.

This represents 5% of local government electors shown on the Register of Electors in force as of 15 February 2024.

The number will be used to check any petition presented between 15 February 2024 and 31 March 2025.
