Starting school – reception 2024

When to apply for a primary school place for your child and guidance about starting school.

If your child was born between 1 September 2019 and 31 August 2020, they will be starting reception in primary school from September 2024.

The application process opened on 1 September 2023 and closed on 15 January 2024. The national offer day is 16 April 2024.

Primary reception offer information

On-time applicants who applied online will receive notification of their offer by email from 5pm on Tuesday 16 April 2024. Paper applicants will receive an email on the same day if they provided an email address. However, paper applicants without an email address will receive their offer notification by post on Wednesday 17 April.

If you have not received your offer notification by the end of Wednesday 17 April, email school.admissions@lbhf.gov.uk

Information about which school has been offered will not be provided over the telephone.

How to respond to the offer

You must accept or decline the offer by Tuesday 30 April 2024. If you applied using a paper form, the offer letter explains how to respond.
If you applied online you must respond to the offer through the eAdmissions website.

You’ll need the username and password you used when you made your application. If you can't remember this information, you can use the 'Forgotten your username or password?' option.

Once you have logged in, go to the 'My school admissions' page then select 'View outcome and respond.'

Schools with vacancies

If you’re not pleased with the offer made to you, you can check to see where there may be vacancies or short waiting lists at other schools.

If you want to change your preferences, email school.admissions@lbhf.gov.uk or call us on 020 8753 1085.

If you’re making further preference for a church school, you may need to contact them directly to complete their supplementary information form.

Appeals

You have the right to appeal against a school's decision not to offer a place to your child.

Academy, free or church schools manage their own admission appeals while School Admissions manage the appeals for community schools.

Late applications

Late application can still be made for a reception place on the eAdmission website which remains open until the middle of August 2024.

However, offers to late applicants will not be considered until the second round of offers after the national offer day and subsequently as applications are received.

Apply for a school place

If there are exceptional circumstances as to why you are unable to submit your application before the closing date, you must indicate this when you apply, or you may provide your reasons by emailing school.admissions@lbhf.gov.uk as soon as possible. If your application is late, your child will not be considered for an offer on national offer day but will wait until second round of offers.
