What you need to know about what registered childminders do, how to register and where to access training and opportunities.

Work as a childminder

The government provides information on what you need to know about registering as a childminder and looking after children in your own home.
This includes:

  • what's involved and what you'll do
  • registering with Ofsted (the Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills) or a childminder agency
  • the checks, training and qualifications you'll need
  • starting a new application
  • real stories from childminders about what their role looks like.

Childminder start up grant scheme

The Department for Education offer £600 to new childminders who have registered with Ofsted, and £1,200 to new childminders who have registered with a childminder agency.

Hammersmith and Fulham childminding training

The pre-registration training in Hammersmith and Fulham is run by the H&F Adult Learning and Skills service (HFALS).

The training:

  • prepares learners to set up a home-based childcare setting
  • is suitable for those wishing to work as childminders, childminding assistants, nannies and au pairs in Hammersmith and Fulham
  • has been developed in collaboration with the Professional Association for Childcare and Early Years (PACEY)

Please note, before booking on you will need to schedule an interview to discuss the suitability of the training for you and whether you will be required to pay training fees. You can also email the training leader, Iffy, at Iffy.Laleye@lbhf.gov.uk to discuss.

PACEY childminding training

You can also access childminding training and gain your qualification directly from the Professional association for childcare and early years (PACEY). However, this is not linked to Hammersmith and Fulham so does not include local knowledge. Visit the PACEY website for more information.

After completing your childminding training and registration

On completing your training and registration, please contact the LBHF Early Years Service on eyfservice@lbhf.gov.uk. Our early years advisors can send you information about our support, local safeguarding contacts and ongoing early years training that is available.

You can also discuss with our early years advisors if you wish to offer funded childcare places and advertise yourself on the Family Information Directory.
