What to expect after a burial has taken place?

Floral tributes

Floral tributes will be removed from graves 14 days after the burial has taken place.  If you wish to keep any tributes or frames these must be taken before the 14th day.

Sinking graves

It is normal for the grave to sink after a burial has taken place.  The cemetery staff will endeavour to top up sunken graves with soil as the excess soil becomes available from other burials.  If you have noticed that the earth on your grave is sinking, please call the cemetery office who will arrange for the grave to be topped up with earth.  Please be aware that even older graves may sink after heavy bouts of rain.

Items and memorials on graves

All new graves purchased within our cemeteries are Lawn style graves, this means that a headstone and base only is permitted.  The installation of borders around the length of the graves is strictly prohibited, including items placed behind the headstone.  Any items left or planting along the length of the grave will be removed without notice.

A small area at the head of the grave, no larger than 18’’ in depth and 3’ in width, may be used to place items or plant seasonal bedding plants.

We recommend waiting a minimum of 12 months before placing a headstone, unless there is a concrete beam at the head of the grave, in this case a memorial can be erected straight away.

Items not permitted to be placed on graves

Glass/trees and bushes are not permitted to be placed/planted on graves and any items/planting found will be removed immediately without notice.

We would like to remind visitors that all items are placed on a grave at the owner/visitors’ risk and the cemetery cannot be held responsible for the loss or damage of any items left on a grave.

We advise purchasing memorial stone insurance for headstones, please ask your mason, or call the cemetery office for further information.

Seeding and turfing

All graves within the cemetery will be turfed, 6 – 12 months after the burial has taken place, dependant on the season/weather.  Please ensure that the area in front of your grave is kept clear, as we will aim to seed all graves after a burial has taken place to encourage grass growth.

Reopening of graves

From time to time we may need to excavate a grave close to or next door to your grave.  We would ask that visitors are understanding of this, as it may be necessary to cover graves with soil to allow for the burial.  Please be assured that the area will be tidied and left as neat as possible once the burial has taken place.

Headstones

Headstones can be purchased from a mason of your choice providing that they are NAMM and BRAMM registered, please contact the office if you would like a list of memorial masons who visit the cemetery.  For further information on headstones please see memorials.
