All new memorials installed in the cemetery, or additional works to an existing memorial, must be authorised by the cemetery office prior to works taking place.  Your stone mason will give you a memorial permit form which must be signed by the grave owner, where there are two grave owners both must sign this form for the permit to be passed.  In the case that you wish to add an owner’s inscription to an existing memorial then an applicant’s signature will suffice.

The maximum dimensions permitted at North Sheen and Mortlake cemeteries for graves on all lawn sections with the exception of E5, E6, E7 and 12C (from grave 266) are as follows:

Lawn graves (headstone and base only)

  • Height 3’6’’
  • Width 3’0’’
  • Depth of base 1’4’’
  • Thickness 6’

The maximum dimensions permitted for sections E5, E6, E7 and 12C (from grave 266)  are as follows:

  • Depth of base 12’’
  • Thickness 6’

Graves located on the older Traditional sections are allowed to erect a full memorial and kerb set / cover slab, the following dimensions apply.

  • Length 6’6’’
  • Width 2’6’’
  • Thickness 6’’

A small Westmoreland slate plaque is permitted on cremated remains graves with the following dimensions:

All lawn memorials must be placed at the head of the grave, no footstones are permitted.

The section and grave number must be engraved on the memorial clearly on either the front or the back of the headstone.

All memorials placed in the cemetery are done so at the risk of the registered grave owner, the council is not responsible for any loss or damage to a memorial.  It is recommended that memorial insurance is obtained from your appointed memorial mason.

Memorials at Margravine

There are separate regulations for memorials erected at Margravine Cemetery.  All new graves purchased in the cemetery are Traditional graves, which allows for either a monolith style headstone or a full memorial (that covers the length of the grave)  the maximum dimensions are shown below:

  • Height 3’6’’
  • Width 3’0’’
  • Length 7’0’’
  • Thickness 6’’

Types of stone that can be used are as follows:

  • Portland
  • Slate
  • York
  • Purbeck
  • Westmoreland
  • Limestone
  • Honed granite

Polished granite and marble are not permitted.

Types of lettering that can be used

  • Incised (cut into the stone no infilling)
  • Black or white painted lettering
  • Lead lettering

Gold or silver guilding is not permitted or any bright colours. Photo plaques are not allowed to be fixed onto the memorial.

Types of kerbs permitted

  • Kerbs with an area for planting
  • Cover slabs

Chippings are not permitted to be placed within the kerbs of the memorial.
