Last week H&F Leader Cllr Stephen Cowan visited the new Quaker Meeting House in Bradmore Park Road following its recent opening.
The building was designed by Stewart Dodd and last month won the Hammersmith Society’s Environment Award.
In its citation the society said “This is a special jewel in the Bradmore Park Road street environment. It celebrates the opportunity of an open site to create a graceful pause in the line of Victorian terraces, each side sharing its front landscaping with the street. The high rotunda reveals itself in longer street views, a sculptural form which expresses the Meeting Room, the heart of the building within.”
H&F, with its partner A2Dominion, facilitated and paid for the design and construction of the new Meeting House when the site of its former premises was needed for the Civic Campus regeneration project in nearby King Street.
Victoria Timberlake, a member of Hammersmith Quakers, said: “We are pleased with our beautiful new Quaker Meeting House, which we hope will be a beacon of environmental sustainability to the Hammersmith community.
“Our building reflects our values of simplicity, equality and peace. We are grateful to the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham for our site on Bradmore Park Road. We are especially pleased that our previous site will be used for truly affordable housing.”
Sheila Hancock commented “Quakers were initially unhappy about their old meeting house being destroyed, but now, 12 years later, we rejoice in our beautiful new building which we hope will bring joy to the neighbourhood.”
Cllr Cowan added “It’s been a pleasure working with Victoria Timberlake and local Quakers on this beautiful project. The new building for Hammersmith Quakers is a gem. I was pleased to be able to make sure a replacement Meeting House was provided. The stunning new building captures the Quaker’s values, particularly their profound commitment to our environment.”
