Hammersmith & Fulham Council and Imperial College London will work together with the local community to tackle health issues at the college’s new state-of-the-art School of Public Health.
Imperial is set to build the latest addition to its campus in White City which will allow the college’s world leading public health researchers to be located together in a dedicated and interactive facility.
The council plans to work with Imperial on public health issues, which include tackling loneliness and isolation.
"I am delighted that Imperial College is choosing to move its world-leading School of Public Health to our borough,” said Cllr Ben Coleman, H&F Cabinet Member for Health and Adult Social Care.
“Their approach of working closely with local people is spot on and is giving residents young and old a range of new opportunities as we work together to make a difference to the well-being of our local residents.”
The new School of Public Health is the latest cutting-edge addition to the borough as a result of the council’s Industrial Strategy (pdf) in partnership with Imperial to make H&F the best place to live, work and play in Europe.
Working together
The School of Public Health will bring cutting-edge research expertise to solve the public health challenges that affect the local community most profoundly – and then apply this learning to shape the future of public health across the globe.
Earlier this year, Imperial launched a £100m fundraising campaign to support the development of the new public health facility.
"This state-of-the-art multidisciplinary hub will provide collaborative and interactive spaces for the College’s world-leading academics and talented students, whilst providing a welcoming place that complements the local area and offering new opportunities to engage with the local community,” said Professor Deborah Ashby, Director of the School of Public Health at Imperial College London.
“I look forward to the prospect of future opportunities to collaborate with H&F Council on our shared public health priorities in the local area.”
Thriving tech district
The School of Public Health will further strengthen the already booming tech district in White City, which includes life sciences giant Novartis, the world’s first bio-tech accelerator RebelBio and the latest arrival GammaDelta Therapeutics.
Imperial also recently unveiled a new research home for its Department of Chemistry on the north site of its White City campus.
The Molecular Sciences Research Hub (MSRH), which opened last autumn, brings together nearly 800 scientists, clinicians, engineers and business partners who are collaborating under one roof for the first time.
It means that researchers from a range of backgrounds will address common challenges in areas such as energy, the environment and health care.
