A new strategy to reduce loneliness and social isolation in Hammersmith & Fulham will be discussed by councillors at a health meeting next week.
H&F Council’s Health, Adult Social Care and Social Inclusion Policy and Accountability Committee meets at Hammersmith Town Hall on Monday (12 December) to review the plans.
Last year, H&F’s newly founded Social Inclusion Board identified social isolation and loneliness as key priorities and developed the draft strategy to create a work programme of intervention.
“Many of our residents can find themselves at the fringes of society due to financial, health or other issues, which are often no fault of their own,” said Cllr Rory Vaughan, Committee Chair.
“As a council, we have already taken the unique step of cancelling home care charges for the elderly and disabled, but for some residents not receiving care there is still a risk of loneliness and isolation. The effects can be devastating, so we will give our full attention to look at ways to address this.
“It is also important to raise awareness of the problem and its indicators, as much as it is necessary to have a framework in place for prevention and support.”
The new strategy aims to improve connectivity within communities to facilitate neighbourliness and help prevent any vulnerable individuals going unnoticed.
Through the draft strategy, residents are encouraged to look out for one another, spotting the signs of loneliness and isolation within themselves and others and helping those they suspect are suffering to come forward.
The strategy also aims to ensure that whichever service or facility a resident engages with, the staff are able to spot and address signs of loneliness effectively.
When the committee meets it will review the draft strategy and advise whether it sufficiently conveys existing activity in H&F, while also highlighting the need and scope for further intervention.
The meeting is open to the public and residents are encouraged to attend and join in the discussions.
