Recycling levels across targeted estates in Hammersmith & Fulham have risen by more than a third following a successful incentive scheme.
Since The Estates Recycling Challenge launched in May, £950 in prizes has been won by individuals and communities that have excelled at being greener.
The results have been so successful, with a 35 per cent increase in recycling in targeted areas, the scheme has now been extended for a further nine months.
“We are determined to drive up recycling rates in Hammersmith & Fulham to help the environment and save taxpayers’ money. It is fantastic that this scheme has boosted both awareness and recycling levels," said Wesley Harcourt, Cabinet Member for Environment, Transport & Residents’ Services.
“This project not only encourages people to recycle more, but also supports the important work being done by local organisations within their communities.”
The challenge encouraged residents of 9,000 estate properties in H&F to recycle as much as they could and in returned earned ‘green points’ for their community, which could then be given to a chosen charity.
After three months, Fulham North was the winning area and received £500, as well as a £200 individual prize given to one recycling resident.
Members of the scheme could vote for which charity project they wanted to support out of: St Mungos Broadway, Action on Disability, Friends of Hammersmith Hospital, Response Community Projects and the Nubian Life Resource Centre.
Fulham North gave their vote to Fulham-based Response Community Projects, who give educational and wellbeing support to vulnerable residents.
The estates taking part are: Becklow Gardens, Du Cane Road, Emlyn Gardens, Kelmscott Gardens, Ollgar Close, White City Estate, Ashcroft Square, Aspen Gardens, Edward Woods, Flora Gardens, Invermead Close, Queen Caroline Estate, Riverside Gardens, Shepherds Court, Bush Court, William Church Estate, Bayonne Estate, Brompton Park Crescent, Clem Attlee Estate, Field Road Estate, Robert Owen House, Seagrave Road, West Kensington Estate, Aintree Estate, Alice Gilliatt Court, Fulham Court, Lancaster Court, Manor Court, Pearscroft Court, Pellant Road, Sulivan Court, Townmead Estate, William Banfield House and Arthur Henderson House.
