Works to green and improve Eelbrook Common are underway

A green sanctuary is taking shape in Fulham’s Eelbrook Common.

Our contractors have begun works to improve the area near Effie Road by removing the old play area and concrete paddling pool. They will be replaced with landscaping and greenery to make it more attractive and safer for local people.

These improvements will also help us prevent flooding by improving drainage and boosting biodiversity.

The works have been funded by the Grow Back Greener Fund 2022 and our negotiations with private developers.

Cllr Sharon Holder, H&F Cabinet Member for Public Realm, said: “We spoke with residents who told us that this section of the park felt unwelcoming and unsafe, particularly as the days are getting shorter.

“Thanks to your feedback, we will transform the space and make it more attractive and green. These efforts will also make it more able to cope with heavy rain to reduce flooding.”

Out with the grey

As part of the works, concrete, tarmac and rubber layers from the old play area have been dug up and removed.

Removing – or ‘depaving’ – these hard surfaces and replacing them with permeable surfaces such as gravel gives rainwater somewhere to drain and can prevent flooding.

The footpaths to each side of the area will remain open to pedestrians throughout these initial works. This work is due to be finished by the end of November.

Bring on the green

Next, we will prepare the area for planting and create accessible walkways for all park users. New trees and greenery will support local wildlife and create new green spaces for people to enjoy. The works are set to begin early next year.
