Have you heard? The days of apprenticeships being just for school-leavers are over.

Hammersmith & Fulham Council is offering local residents of all ages and levels of experience the chance to work as an apprentice.

Not only could you secure yourself a job with a London Living Wage employer, but more importantly you could help make a real and lasting change to your borough at the same time.

The apprenticeship courses and qualifications – ranging from GCSE to Master’s degree level in all sectors – are the perfect way to develop new skills to help boost your career.

“We want to give all local residents the best opportunities to not only get their foot on the career ladder but rise up the career ladder too,” said Cllr Andrew Jones, H&F Cabinet Member for the Economy and the Arts.

“The council is working with all residents regardless of their age to help them benefit from the prosperity of a booming borough as we make H&F the best place to live, work and socialise in Europe.”

The apprenticeship scheme forms part of the council’s Industrial Strategy (pdf 2.57MB) which aims to ensure no one is left behind as the council brings shared prosperity to H&F with the support and investment of all the businesses, large and small, moving to the borough.

Meet Busayo: Local apprentice

Busayo Epega is the latest local resident to benefit from the apprenticeship scheme.

The 27-year-old, who grew up on the White City estate, is currently working his way towards becoming a fully qualified HR support officer at the council.

After floating from job to job, Busayo spotted the apprenticeship opportunity on the council’s website and could not be happier now.

“It has been great for me,” said Busayo. “I was out of work for a number of months and couldn’t catch a break but now I’m doing something I love.

“I’m now working in a young team and doing things to benefit my local community which gives me a real buzz.

“I previously worked in a call-centre and in recruitment and realised the human element was the part of the job I enjoyed the most.”

And the good news doesn’t stop there for the new apprentice, who now lives in Olympia.

“The other great thing about working for your local council is that I have a pleasant 15-minute commute into work on foot which people would die for,” added Busayo.

Busayo graduated from Southampton Solent university with a degree in sports science but quickly realised it was not for him.

He went on to work in call centres and in recruitment before starting his apprenticeship at the council last summer.
