Fulham Palace light artist Aowen Jin
Want to see one of the borough’s most fascinating historic venues transformed into a magical, light-inspired space, filled with creative work from a leading artist?
Fulham Palace, the historic home of the Bishops of London, has been shortlisted in a competition to be transformed by artist Aowen Jin for the Museums at Night festival in October.
Fulham Palace Trust learning officer Eleanor Sier said it was ‘exciting news’ to have been shortlisted in the competition. “But we need your help as the selection is through a public vote. Please support us,” she added.
A public vote running until Saturday (14 May) will decide on the chosen venue for the three-day artistic event, which will include a workshop for local people to collaborate on creating art for the project.
Jin – who has been named by The Times newspaper as ‘one of tomorrow’s great artists’ – explained: “Imagine a gallery that’s filled with magical figurative stories, like the Sistine Chapel, but that can only be seen using UV torches.
“As you move the torch around the museum in the dark, all of the paintings on the wall come to life, and they appear and disappear as your beam of light moves from one image to another. The paintings are inspired by the history and collections of the museum itself, reflected through the eyes of the viewers.”
Fulham Palace is up against four other venues across the UK to win the chance to feature in the Museums at Night festival from 27-29 October.
Also in the running are Compton Verney Art Gallery and Park, in Warwickshire; past winner the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust, in Telford; Rhondda Heritage Park, in Wales; and Torre Abbey Historic House & Gardens, in Torquay.
