This year marks 80 years since the famous D-Day landings on the beaches of Normandy.

Much of the operations for this pivotal moment in World War 2 were planned right here in the borough. Join local historians, entertainers and army personnel to commemorate this historic event.

It proved to be the turning point in the Second World War – but few realise that D-Day was planned in Hammersmith by Generals Bernard Montgomery and Dwight Eisenhower, and presented to Winston Churchill and King George VI.

To mark the 80th anniversary of the beach landings which led to the retaking of continental Europe by the Allied forces, an event is being held in the gardens of the former St Paul’s School in Hammersmith Road, where Operation Overlord was finalised on Saturday 8 June.

There will be a range of activities to get involved with including historical reenactments, military vehicle and weapons displays, have-a-go activities for families, live wartime entertainment, army personnel and cadet stands, and historical information displays. The event is free to attend and we welcome the whole community to come and celebrate this monumental piece of the boroughs history.
