H&F Energy Champions

Training and support programme

We are offering FREE training and resources to residents interested in helping their communities improve the energy efficiency of their homes.

About the programme

H&F Energy Champions will be supporting residents and communities across the borough, giving up-to-date information about the best energy-efficiency tools and resources, and inspiring people to save energy – and money!

This voluntary role will give you the opportunity be a leading voice within your community, and to be at the frontline of taking action for greener, cleaner homes.

H&F Energy Champions will receive training to support them in this journey, learning key skills and knowledge around energy, community engagement, and how to future-proof homes for both our health and the planet.

Following an initial training period, H&F Energy Champions will be given ongoing support, resources and guidance from the H&F Climate Team, boosting their impact in this important role.

Energy Champions training

Training will take place across two 2-hour sessions and be tailored to ensure that our Energy Champions:

  • feel confident talking about energy efficiency and the key actions individuals can take
  • have up-to-date information around available support and grants
  • can positively communicate the benefits (health, financial, environmental) of greater energy efficiency
  • understand best practices when it comes to behaviour change and communicating within your community.

Times and locations will be organised once applications have been reviewed to best suit the people who have been offered spaces.

Eligibility

Applicants must be H&F residents and demonstrate:

  • passion and interest in energy efficiency
  • commitment to be trained in and keep up to date with technical and practical information to help you deliver high quality and useful energy advice
  • customer service or people-facing experience (friendly, empathic and approachable)
  • commitment to understanding types of retrofits available
  • commitment to understanding support and grants available
  • personal experience with retrofit works in their own home or implemented behavioural changes (desirable)

Recognising how energy needs impact different communities in different ways, we welcome a wide range of people to apply for this opportunity. If you have any access needs or would need any support to take part in the programme, you can let us know about this when you sign up for the project.

Why join?

Energy is something which impacts all our lives daily, whether it comes to health, money, or doing our bit for the planet. Whilst we all use energy every day, it is not always clear what decisions we should be making when it comes to saving energy, accessing help, or making our homes warmer, healthier and greener. Community leaders play a crucial role in getting up-to-date and accessible information to our neighbours and fellow residents.

Becoming a H&F Energy Champion is an opportunity to make a real impact. As you will be working closely with H&F Climate Team, this is also an excellent opportunity to gain valuable skills and insight, such as delivering high-quality energy advice, understanding retrofits and available grants, and developing strong people-facing abilities

Projects available

We will work closely with you to build clear projects and goals based on your skills and available community. These projects will look different for each Energy Champion, but may include:

  • attending local events across the borough to engage with the community on energy-related issues, actions, home improvements, and benefits
  • engaging in canvassing (door-knocking) across specific neighbourhoods to promote home improvements and share insights on available energy options
  • becoming a Green Open Home, discussing and inspiring individuals on the benefits of energy efficient home improvements by sharing the impact they've made in your own home.

Get creative and organise your own activities to engage the community. This could include discussing energy through art, your book club, a cooking evening, gardening – they can all be related back to energy.
