Making film sets greener in H&F

Our top sustainable filmmaking tips for eco-friendly film production on location.

We're committed to reducing the environmental impact of film productions in our borough. This means cutting emissions, lowering noise, and improving air quality for residents.

To help with this, we're starting to ban diesel generators and ask crews to use battery-powered generators first. If that's not possible, use hybrid, Stage V, or generators that run on HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil).

We also encourage production crews to add sustainability goals to their production plan, budget, and timeline.

Sustainability tips

Things you can do:

  • educate cast and crew on sustainable practices
  • use digital scripts, call sheets, and schedules to reduce paper waste
  • design sets that can be disassembled and reused
  • reduce emissions by organising shared transport
  • rent or lease electric vehicles for crew and equipment transport
  • clearly label bins for recycling, compost, and landfill
  • donate leftover food to local shelters or use it for organic waste composting
  • avoid single-use plastics and use reusable water bottles, utensils, and dishware
  • source food from local, sustainable farms
  • offer vegetarian and vegan meals to lower your carbon footprint
  • reduce packaging waste by serving meals buffet-style
  • replace traditional lighting with energy-efficient LED fixtures

Why sustainable filmmaking matters

Using eco-friendly practices in filmmaking helps both the industry and the planet. It cuts carbon emissions, reduces waste, saves money, and supports social responsibility.

As the film industry continues to evolve, it's important to make sustainability part of every production. This helps protect the environment while ensuring the industry can thrive.

By choosing greener options and inspiring others to do the same, filmmakers can contribute to a cleaner, more responsible future.
