We've been working with Melcombe Primary School and Kensington Wade to make the area around the schools safer, greener, and healthier.
Update – September 2025
Following feedback from local residents, we are bringing the timed road closure trial to a close, and the temporary barriers will be removed at the start of the new academic year.
But we're still committed to making school runs better. Instead of barriers, we're focusing on community-led Plus measures. These are actions that make walking, wheeling, and cycling easier and more pleasant for families.
What might happen next?
We're exploring improvements like:
- green screens and new planting to reduce pollution and brighten the streets
- secure cycle and scooter storage at schools, plus cargo bike parking for families and cycle hangars for nearby residents
- widening pavements and improved crossing points to make walking safer and more comfortable
- traffic calming and refreshed safety markings to reduce danger near school gates
- a more welcoming entrance to the school with seating or floral features to create a warm, friendly space.
These changes will help reduce congestion, improve air quality, and support healthier school journeys.
