Ordering a certificate

We hold all of the death entries in the Hammersmith & Fulham Register since 1837. If you would like to order a death certificate you need to provide the following information about the entry:

  • full name
  • date of death
  • place of death.

Processing times and costs

Standard Service

A Standard Service takes five working days to be processed and can either be collected or posted.

If the certificate is being posted then allow extra time for it to arrive in the post, up to 10 working days.

Priority Service

A Priority Service* takes 24 hours (1 working day) to be processed and can either be collected or posted.

The certificate will ready 24 hours (1 working day) after it was ordered. For example, if the certificate was ordered at 10am, it will be ready at 10am the following day.

*All the required information needs to be provided in order for us to locate the entry and process the certificate as a priority.

While-You-Wait Service

A While-You-Wait Service** normally takes 1 hour to process. You will need to order the certificate before 3pm in order for the certificate to be produced on the same day.

If ordered after 4pm the certificate will be available for collection at 10am the following day.

**All the required information needs to be provided in order for us to locate the entry and process the certificate as a While-You-Wait service.

Fees

  • Certificate – Standard Service to be collected: £10
  • Certificate – Standard Service with Recorded Delivery: £11.50
  • Certificate – Standard Service with Special Delivery (including overseas delivery): £17
  • Certificate – Priority Service to be collected: £30
  • Certificate – Priority Service with Recorded Delivery: £31.50
  • Certificate – Priority Service with Special Delivery (including overseas delivery): £37
  • Certificate – While-You-Wait Service to be collected: £40
  • Certificate – While-You-Wait Service Recorded Delivery: £41.50
  • Certificate – While-You-Wait Service with Special Delivery (including overseas delivery): £47

You can order a certificate on the telephone, through the post, or in person.

Order by post

You can order a certificate by downloading an application form, filling it in and sending it to us with a cheque or postal order.

Please post your application, cheque or postal order and a self-addressed and stamped envelope to: The Register Office, Hammersmith Town Hall, King Street, London, W6 9JU.

Cheques or postal orders should be made payable to: “Hammersmith & Fulham Council.”

If you prefer to pay for your postage and not send a self-addressed and stamped envelope, please include £1.50 for recorded delivery or £7.00 for special delivery on your cheque or postal order.

Order by phone

You can order a certificate by calling 020 8753 2140 from Monday to Friday between 9am and 4.30pm and pay by debit or credit card.

Order in person

You can order a certificate in person from Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm. Please come to The Register Office, Hammersmith Town Hall, King Street, London, W6 9JU.

The Register Office reception is on Nigel Playfair Avenue.

Deaths outside Hammersmith & Fulham

If the death occurred outside Hammersmith & Fulham, you can order the death certificate directly from the register office where the death entry is held.

Unknown information

All records of deaths which took place in England and Wales will be held at the General Register Office (GRO). The GRO is able to carry out a much wider search in cases where details are not known. You can order a certificate online or by phone on 0300 123 1837.
