H&F Council statement on HS2 utility cables and sewer diversion

30 October 2020

Wormwood Scrubs is an invaluable asset to the people of Hammersmith & Fulham and others beyond. It is a recognised haven for wildlife, hosting immensely valuable biodiversity. It is also an important leisure space.

We are outraged at HS2’s intention to destroy so much of this natural asset and disrupt the lives of residents. The proposed works would be a massive blow to the area’s biodiversity.

Unlike HS2, we aim to do things with residents and not to them. We also work with environmental groups, sports clubs, Wormwood Scrub Friends Group and the Wormwood Scrubs Charitable Trust to ensure HS2 addresses all concerns, from noise and subsidence issues to biodiversity loss and habitat reinstatement.

We are appalled at the lack of resident consultation undertaken ahead of HS2’s survey work, and we have urgently demanded that these pause and that they listen to the concerns of residents.

Having recently declared a climate and ecological emergency it is imperative we ensure that HS2 works do not come at such cost to the environment or residents’ quality of life.
