Thousands of Hammersmith & Fulham residents from the EU face an uncertain future under Brexit.

Meanwhile, the uncertainty of whether the Brexit deal being negotiated by the government can be better for the average working family than staying with the deal we have currently is yet to be resolved.

Hammersmith & Fulham Council has pledged to do everything possible to support EU citizens and protect local jobs and career opportunities. It has also called on the government to abandon any plans for a hard Brexit and to give the British people a vote on whatever deal they end up getting – along with the opportunity to vote on keeping the many benefits Britons currently enjoy by staying in the European Union.

Seventy per cent of H&F residents voted to ‘remain’ in the EU referendum.

“This is a crucial point in our great country’s history. What happens next will affect all our children and grandchildren for generations to come. It’s only right that we should ensure that what we do now leaves them with the best possible opportunities for a prosperous, secure and happy future,” says Cllr Stephen Cowan, Leader of Hammersmith & Fulham Council.

“For that reason, the British people should have an opportunity to review and vote on the Brexit deal the government ends up negotiating alongside the option of staying in the EU.

“We’ve arranged for borough residents from the EU to have full access to practical advice and have launched a webpage and social media campaign to celebrate the fantastic contribution EU citizens make to Hammersmith & Fulham.

“We want our residents from the EU to know that we want them to stay and we appreciate everything they bring to our lives. We will continue to fight for the rights of all Hammersmith & Fulham’s residents”.

Legacy of Europe in H&F

Many residents who’ve come from Europe have thrived after making H&F their home. They’ve opened unique businesses, adding to the fantastic selection of businesses already much valued within the borough. And they've helped galvanise local communities and provided sporting heroes for us to cheer.

So the council has made a website dedicated to them. To celebrating our valued European population. Visit H&F: Heart of Europe to read their stories and find out how the council is supporting them.

Please help us to recognise and celebrate everything our EU friends and neighbours do for Hammersmith & Fulham.

If you’d like to tell us about your fantastic European friends or neighbours, or promote a business or community organisation that we’ve missed out, please email us at: shareyourviews@lbhf.gov.uk.
