Rubbish (non-recyclables)

Bin collections, reporting a missed collection, information about disposing of DIY waste and hazardous waste and more.

Bin collections

Your bin collection day does not change on or after a bank holiday weekend. Collection days do change at Christmas and New Year.

Please put your rubbish and recycling out before 6am on your normal collection day – or after 9pm on the evening before.

Putting your bins out on the wrong day, or in flimsy bags, leads to litter-strewn streets. Most people put their bins out on the right day, in the right way. Do you?

Help us keep your street clean:

  • Only put your rubbish out before 6am on your collection day – or after 9pm on the evening before.
  • Please put waste in strong refuse sacks, not flimsy carrier bags or kitchen bin liners.
  • Don't put loose waste out for collection, or in your dustbin. Loose waste is not secure and can attract vermin.
  • Put your bin bags and recycling in your front garden or outside your property where they are clearly visible.
  • If you receive the food waste collection service please place your outdoor food bin outside on the edge of the property, ready for collection.
  • You can put your bin bags out for collection by themselves or in a dustbin – we recommend the use of normal 90 litre dustbins.
  • We only collect waste from H&F wheeled bins or any other bin smaller than 90 litres.

Putting your bins out on the wrong day, or in the wrong way, could result in action against you for dumping rubbish. If problems continue, we may stop your collections or prosecute you. Our residents and businesses care about clean streets and so do we. Don't be a dumper.

Disposing of PPE

Please think of the infection risks to other people when disposing of personal protective equipment (PPE). As with other litter, do not drop used gloves or masks in the street – but also do not place these items in street bins, as this could put our street cleaning staff at risk. Please take your used PPE home with you and place it inside its own bag, and keep it safely within your home for three days. Then place this bag within your domestic waste bag (ie. double bagging the PPE), and put this out for collection as usual. By doing this, you can reduce the chance of spreading the virus to others.

All rubbish and recycling should be left out for collection as normal at the edge of your property. Don't approach the refuse collectors to give them bags of waste. Please follow the guidelines around social distancing to protect yourself and our staff.

Bins and rubbish collection for street-level properties

Check your rubbish and recycling collection day by your postcode. Your bin collection day does not change on or after a bank holiday weekend. Collection days do change at Christmas and New Year.

Check your collection day

If you live in a house, a small block of flats or a flat above a shop we will collect your rubbish and recycling from outside your home. We collect your rubbish and recycling on the same day, using a vehicle with compartments to keep the bin bags and recycling separate.

Missed bin collections

Missed collections should be reported within 48 hours of collection day and the crew will return to collect before the next collection day.

Report a missed bin collection

Council estates, flats and mansion blocks

If you live on an estate or in a flat or mansion block, it is likely that there will be communal refuse bins.

More information about collections from estates

Collections from basements

If you live in a basement flat, you must put out your refuse and recycling at street level for collection before 6am on your collection day, or after 9pm the previous evening. However, if you are Disabled we may be able to help you with an 'assisted collection'.

Please contact the cleaner greener hotline on 020 8753 1100 and we’ll send you an application form. There is no charge for this service.

Collection of clinical and incontinence waste, and sharps

We run a household collection service for clinical or incontinence waste and sharps for residents (not businesses). We'll need a referral from your GP, district nurse or social worker.

Please email us at clinicalwaste@lbhf.gov.uk for more information on referrals.

Building work and DIY waste

The reuse and recycling centre Western Riverside accepts household waste (including a small quantity of DIY-type waste).

However, if tradespeople are working on your home, please make sure they are contracted to dispose of the waste they produce.

Hazardous waste

The City of London operates a household hazardous waste collection and disposal service on our behalf. They can remove wrapped asbestos and packaged chemicals and paint from households.

Please call 020 7332 3433 to arrange for a collection by the City of London’s service or visit the City of London's website to do it online.

Paint

Residents can dispose of up to 10 litres of unused paint at Smugglers Way Household Waste and Recycling Centre. It is preferable if the paint is dry and hardened to assist with the drying out process. Please leave the lid off the paint container before bringing it to the centre.  Adding cat litter or sawdust will help the drying out process further.

Water-based paint, once dried, residents can deliver it to the Smugglers Way Household Waste and Recycling Centre. Please put them in the rubbish only container.

Oil-based paints should be delivered to the centre and must be placed in the paint storage container in Recycling Bay A.

If the paint cans are empty, please place them in the scrap metal container at the waste and recycling centre for recycling.

More information, please visit Western Riverside website.

Any full or part full containers of paint can be reused by the London Reuse Network. Please visit our bulky waste collection page for further information and for details of how to book a collection.
