Newly qualified teachers induction

All our schools provide organised programmes of school-based support to help newly qualified teachers.

All our schools provide organised programmes of school-based support to help newly qualified teachers (NQTs) meet the challenges of their first teaching role and demonstrate the required professional standards. During induction, NQTs are assigned to an experienced teacher who will act as their induction tutor.

Registration

We can act as Appropriate Body (AB) for maintained and non-maintained schools that meet the criteria for institutions where NQT induction may be served. This criteria can be found in Section 2 of the Statutory guidance for induction (pdf 317kb, available from GOV.UK). All NQTs must be registered with an AB (and a NQT's eligibility and the suitability of their post must be approved in advance) before induction can officially begin.

In order to undertake induction and meet the relevant teaching standards, a NQT must be employed for at least one term, and within a role which will allow them to demonstrate the required knowledge and professional skills. More information about the suitability of NQT posts can be found on page 12 of the Statutory guidance for Induction.

If you would like to register a NQT for induction or would like a copy of the NQT Service Level Agreement (SLA), please contact the NQT service which manages the induction process for the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and Westminster City Council, at: nqtadmin@rbkc.gov.uk

Part time NQTs

NQTs on part time contracts will need to complete their induction over a longer period than the standard full time equivalent (FTE) which is three terms. For example, an NQT on a 0.5FTE contract would need twice as long to complete their induction: six terms over a two-year period.

Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)

NQTs must have QTS before they start their induction and evidence of this will be required by the Appropriate Body. For more information about obtaining QTS certificates and Teacher Reference Numbers please contact the National College for Teaching and Leadership at: Teacher.INDUCTION@education.gsi.gov.uk.
