Ordering a certificate
We hold all of the birth entries which occurred within the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham since 1837. If you would like to order a birth certificate you need to provide the following information about the entry:
- child’s full name
- date of birth
- place of birth
- mother's full name
- mother's maiden name
- father's full name.
There are two types of birth certificates available. The full birth certificate includes both the child and the parent’s information. The short certificate includes only the child’s information. The full certificate is the most widely accepted certificate for passport applications and school admissions.
Processing times and costs
A Standard Service can take five working days to be processed and can either be collected or posted.
If the certificate is being posted then allow extra time, up to 10 working days.
A Priority Service is available.
The certificate will need to be ordered no later than 4pm in order to be available for collection between 3pm and 5pm the following day.
*All the required information needs to be provided in order for us to locate the entry and process the certificate as a priority.
A While-You-Wait Service is available. You will need to apply in person at the office before 3pm in order for the certificate to be produced within 1 hour.
If ordered after 4pm the certificate may not be available for collection until 10am the following day.

- Certificate with first class post: £11
- Certificate with Recorded Delivery: £11.50
- Certificate with Special Delivery (including overseas delivery): £17
- Certificate to be collected: £10
- Certificate with *Priority Service (produced within 24 hours): £30 (please add postage if required: £1, £1.50 or £7)
- Certificate with **While-You-Wait service (produced within 1 hour): £40 (only available at the Register Office)

Order by post
You can order a certificate by downloading an application form, filling it in and posting it to us with a cheque or postal order.
Please post your application, cheque or postal order and a self-addressed and stamped envelope to: The Register Office, Hammersmith Town Hall, King Street, London, W6 9JU.
Cheques or postal orders should be made payable to: “Hammersmith and Fulham Council.”
If you prefer to pay for your postage and not send a self-addressed and stamped envelope, please include £1.00 for first class post, £1.50 for recorded delivery or £7.00 for special delivery on your cheque or postal order.
Order by phone
You can order a certificate by calling 020 8753 2140 from Monday to Friday between 9am and 4.30 pm and pay by debit or credit card.
Order in person
You can order a certificate in person from Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm. Please come to The Register Office, Hammersmith Town Hall, King Street, London, W6 9JU.
Births outside Hammersmith & Fulham
If a birth occurred outside Hammersmith & Fulham you can order the birth certificate directly from the register office where the birth entry is held.
All records of births which took place in England and Wales will be held at the General Register Office (GRO). The GRO is able to carry out a much wider search in cases where details are not known. You can order a certificate online or call 0300 123 1837.
