Ordering a certificate

We keep records of all marriages in Hammersmith & Fulham since 1837. If you would like to order a marriage certificate please provide the following information:

  • full name of bride
  • full name of groom
  • date of marriage
  • place of marriage.

You can order a certificate on the telephone, through the post, or in person.

Order by post

You can order a certificate by posting us an application form and a cheque or postal order.

Please post your application, cheque or postal order and a self-addressed and stamped envelope to: The Register Office, Hammersmith Town Hall, King Street, London, W6 9JU.

Cheques or postal orders should be made payable to: “Hammersmith & Fulham Council.” See below for processing times and costs. 

If you prefer to pay for your postage and not send a self-addressed and stamped envelope, please include £2.00 for Signed For delivery, £7.00 for Special delivery or £8.00 for International Signed and Tracked delivery on your cheque or postal order.

Order by phone

You can order a certificate by calling 020 8753 2140 from Monday to Friday between 9am and 4.30pm and pay by debit or credit card.

Order in person

You can order a certificate in person from Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm. Please come to The Register Office, Hammersmith Town Hall, King Street, London, W6 9JU.

The Register Office reception is on Nigel Playfair Avenue.

Processing times and costs

Standard Service

A Standard Service takes five working days to be processed and can either be collected or posted.

If the certificate is being posted then allow extra time for it to arrive in the post, up to 10 working days.

Standard Service fees

  • Certificate – To be collected: £11
  • Certificate – Posted using Royal Mail Signed For Delivery*: £13
  • Certificate – Posted using Royal Mail Special Delivery**: £18
  • Certificate – Posted using Royal Mail International Tracked & Signed Delivery**: £19

*Aim to deliver next working day, including Saturdays.  Usual time scales between 1 and 3 working days.
**End to end tracking and signature on delivery online or via your mobile

Priority Service

A Priority Service takes 24 hours (1 working day) to be processed and can either be collected or posted. All the required information needs to be provided in order for us to locate the entry and process the certificate as a priority.

The certificate will ready 24 hours (1 working day) after it was ordered. For example, if the certificate was ordered at 10am, it will be ready at 10am the following day.

  • Certificate – To be collected: £35
  • Certificate – Posted using Royal Mail Signed For Delivery*: £37
  • Certificate – Posted using Royal Mail Special Delivery**: £42
  • Certificate – Posted using Royal Mail International Tracked & Signed Delivery**: £43

While-You-Wait Service

A While-You-Wait Service normally takes 1 hour to process. You will need to order the certificate before 3pm in order for the certificate to be produced on the same day. All the required information needs to be provided in order for us to locate the entry and process the certificate as a priority.

If ordered after 4pm the certificate will be available for collection at 10am the following day.

While You Wait Service fees

  • Certificate – To be collected: £41
  • Certificate – Posted using Royal Mail Signed For Delivery*: £43
  • Certificate – Posted using Royal Mail Special Delivery**: £48
  • Certificate – Posted using Royal Mail International Tracked & Signed Delivery**: £49

Marriages outside Hammersmith & Fulham

If a marriage occurred outside Hammersmith & Fulham you can order the marriage certificate directly from the register office where the marriage entry is held.

Unknown information

All records of marriages which took place in England and Wales will be held at the General Register Office (GRO). The GRO is able to carry out a much wider search in cases where details are not known. You can order a certificate online or call 0300 123 1837.
