Changes to registrars services due to coronavirus
The coronavirus pandemic has not ended and the virus is still present in the population. It may be necessary to cancel or reschedule appointments and ceremonies at short notices due to changes in government restriction or the need for our staff to self-isolate. By booking at this time you agree that you understand and accept the risk of late notice cancellations or rescheduling.
The register office is open for pre-booked appointments only. Please do not turn up to the register office without an appointment as you will not be allowed into the building.
We thank you for your understanding at this difficult time. Our telephone lines are extremely busy so please direct all enquiries to our dedicated email addresses:
Births - If your baby was born in the last 42 days you can now book an appointment online, see How to register a birth. If you already have an appointment you will not be able to book another appointment online. If you need to re-schedule an appointment or if your baby was born more than 42 days ago then please email firstname.lastname@example.org
Marriage and civil partnership ceremonies - From 4 July marriage ceremonies and civil partnership formations can go ahead if public health guidelines, government advice and social distancing conditions are met. We will be prioritising ceremonies where a booking was confirmed during the lockdown period but subsequently had to be cancelled. Current confirmed bookings will be honoured, providing the latest public health guidance is met. All new ceremony requests will be booked in afterwards. Please email your enquiry to email@example.com
Face coverings are required during your ceremony - Following updated government and public health guidance, face coverings are required during your ceremony. This update applies to guests at weddings and civil partnership ceremonies. Face coverings are not required for the couple getting married or forming a civil partnership, although it is strongly recommended to ensure the safety of everyone and to prevent the spread of COVID-19
Citizenship ceremonies - Due to capacity restrictions and social distancing conditions, no guests will be allowed to attend a group citizenship ceremony.
You also have the option for a private citizenship ceremony. Please note that we can only book your ceremony once we have received your certificate of naturalisation from the Home Office, you will need to wait until you receive an invitation letter from the Home Office. Please email your enquiry to firstname.lastname@example.org
Customers would normally be expected to book their citizenship ceremony within three months of being sent an invitation from the Home Office. Due to the current pandemic circumstances UKVI have extended this period to six months and will keep this under constant review. Customers should be advised that no adverse decisions will be made on applications because of delays caused by coronavirus.
Face coverings are required during your ceremony - This update applies to both private and group citizenship ceremonies. Face coverings ensure the safety of everyone and prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Certificates - We won't be able to produce any duplicate certificates until at least November 2020. You can still order online through the General Register Office for England and Wales (GRO).
Deaths and still-births - We’re currently only offering telephone appointments for death and stillbirth registrations. Please do not attend the register office. You can still book an appointment online but instead we will call you at your appointment start time. The doctor or hospital will need to send us the medical cause of death certificate electronically to enable us to arrange the telephone registration.
We thank you for your understanding at this difficult time. Our telephone lines are extremely busy so please email your enquiry to email@example.com
Notices of intention to marry or form a civil partnership - Notice for marriage and civil partnership appointments have resumed and you are now able to book an appointment online. If you require a ‘designated’ notice appointment (if you or your partner are subject to immigration control) then you are able to give notice at most Register Offices across London.
